College of Science Scholarships
JOINT APPLICATION MEDICAL PROGRAM (JAMP)
JAMP is a special program created by the Texas Legislature in 2002 to support and encourage highly qualified, economically disadvantaged students who are interested in pursuing a medical education.
Award Amount:
- Once a student has been admitted, award is $1000 per long semester, and expenses and stipend for one semester each summer
Application Deadline:
General Information:
- Students must apply in or just after their freshmen year between April 1 and September 1 on a centralized online application.
- Must be engaged in pre-medical program with the intent to apply to medical school in one of the state-funded Texas medical schools (stipends must be paid back if student drops out of the program)
- Students must attend a mandatory summer session at an assigned Texas medical school (stipend and expenses paid)

DOROTHY COKER FELLOWSHIP
This scholarship was established in 1989 in memory of Dorothy Coker, by her husband William.
Award Amount:
- Competitive award of up to $4,000 in support of research-related costs

General Information:
- Available to graduate students majoring in the College of Science
- Must be engaged in a thesis project related to cancer research
- Students must be nominated by a Texas State faculty member

GWEN S. DURRENBERGER SCHOLARSHIP FOR WOMEN IN SCIENCE
Gwen and Weldon Durrenberger shared fond memories of their college days and because of this love and his deep love for his wife, Gwen, Weldon made a gift of property to Texas State University. Both Weldon and Gwen had exciting careers in the sciences. Weldon wanted to create a lasting memory for Gwen and at the same time assist students who were pursuing a degree in one of the sciences, technology or engineering. This property gift has been developed into the Gwen S. Durrenberger Endowment for Women in Science.
Award Amount:
- Undergraduate awards are $1000 to $6000 based on classification from undergraduate, current MS and PhD students, and entering PhD students.
Application Deadline:
- Application deadline is March 1 with selections to be completed by March 31
General Information:
- Successful candidates should be pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in one of the sciences, technology or engineering
- Candidates can apply for the award or be nominated
- Evidence of excellence to be included in the application packet should include, but is not limited to the following:
- An updated CV or resume emphasizing scholarly accomplishments and previous honors.
- An up-to-date college transcript.
- A statement of personal and professional goals related to how a degree in the sciences may have greater societal impact
- Three letters of reference
- Submit completed application packets to the Dean's Office, College of Science, 201 Centennial Hall

HOUSTON-LOUIS STOKES ALLIANCE FOR MINORITY PARTICIPATION SCHOLARS PROGRAM (H-LSAMP)
In partnership with the National Science Foundation, the H-LSAMP program is designed to substantially increase the quality, quantity, and diversity of students graduating with baccalaureate degrees in STEM fields - the sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Award Amount:
- Individual awards are $1,500 per long semester. This is a continuing, renewable award as long as funds are available and all program requirements are met each semester. In scholar’s 5th semester in the program, award increases to $2,000 per long semester.
Application Deadline:
- Application deadline: March 15th for Fall awards/October 15th for Spring awards
General Information:
- Available to undergraduate students
- Student must be majoring in one of the following disciplines: agricultural science, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, computer information systems, computer science, engineering, general agriculture, mathematics, nutrition & foods, physics, geography resource & environmental studies, or technology

JOAN AUSTIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established in 1993 in memory of former College of Science staff member, Joan Austin, who worked in Science Purchasing for over 20 years.
Award Amount:
- Annual award of $500 ($250 each long semester)

- Available to undergraduate students majoring in the College of Science
- Must have and maintain a minimum 3.00 Texas State GPA
- Requires proof of financial need (Student Aid Report)

MARIEL M. MUIR ENDOWED SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established in 1997 to honor Mariel M. Muir, Dean of the College of Science from 1993-1996.
Award Amount:
- Annual award of $1000 ($500 each long semester)
Application Deadline:
General Information
- This scholarship will be awarded to a junior undergraduate student majoring in the College of Science to help provide financial support during the senior year.
- Applicants should demonstrate a commitment to campus and/or community activities and demonstrate leadership inside and outside of the classroom
- Must have completed at least 30 Texas State hours by the end of the Fall semester of their junior year
- Requires a minimum Texas State GPA of 3.60
OUTSTANDING UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT AWARD
The Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award is presented annually to a College of Science undergraduate student who possesses outstanding characteristics in scholarship and service. Recognition is awarded in the form of a plaque presented to the student. In addition, a perpetual plaque with the student’s name is displayed outside the office of the Dean of Science.
Application Deadline:
General Information:
- Applicant should possesses outstanding personal and professional characteristics
- Applicant must maintain a Texas State GPA of 3.25 or greater based on at least 90 hours, 30 of which are earned at Texas State
- Contact individual departments for applications
OUTSTANDING GRADUATE STUDENT AWARD
The Outstanding Graduate Student Award is presented annually to a College of Science graduate student who possesses outstanding characteristics in scholarship, research, teaching, and service. Recognition is awarded in the form of a plaque presented to the student. In addition, a perpetual plaque with the student’s name is displayed outside the office of the Dean of Science.

- Applicant should exhibit leadership and participation in departmental. College and university activities
- Applicant must maintain a Texas State GPA of 3.25 or greater based on at least 18 hours of graduate work earned at Texas State
- Contact individual departments for applications
PRESIDENTIAL UPPER LEVEL SCHOLARSHIP
The Presidential Upper Level Scholarship Program provides financial assistance and special recognition to a limited number of undergraduate students with exceptional academic achievement in their college work. Students receiving other scholarships funded by Student Service Fees are not eligible for Presidential Upper Level Scholarships unless they elect to forfeit the other(s) for that year. Students can only be awarded this scholarship once.
Award Amount:
- Annual award of $1200 ($600 for each long semester)
Application Deadline:
General Information:
- Applicants should possesses outstanding academic achievement and leadership
- Applicants must be full-time students with 60 or more credit hours by the beginning of the fall semester, of which 30 hours must be earned at Texas State University
- Applicant must maintain a minimum course load of 12 hours each semester

SMITH-WILMS SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship will be awarded to a junior undergraduate student majoring in Chemistry, Biology or Physics to help provide financial support during the senior year.
Award Amount:
- Award is $500 and a plaque awarded at the end of the student’s junior year
Application Deadline:
General Information:
- Student must demonstrate a record of exceptional academic achievement
- Special consideration will be given to students who have expressed an interest in graduate studies and in pursuing careers in teaching and research
- Faculty nominated
- If interested in this scholarship, please contact a faculty member in your major department (Chemistry, Biology, or Physics departments only)
